Hand
Scissors
Useful for freehand cutting thin sheeting e.g. <2mm EVA, <1mm PMMA/HIPS
Kevlar scissors
Useful for cutting thicker soft sheeting e.g. UHMWPE
-
Cut out form with bandsaw or Kevlar scissors. (Can also do rough cut on bandsaw and then second pass with scissors.
-
Neaten edges with a file or sandpaper.
High frequency blade
- Sonic knife – Useful for cutting through cleanly and leaving a smooth edge on rigid materials e.g. PMMA. To improve the setup; use a longer knife and a more powerful sonic cutter, this can lend itself to a smoother easier cut. Be mindful of access points for the knife. Angle of the cut, using a guide that will not melt or blunt the blade. (H&S use goggles, ear defenders and respirator, cut gloves are also recommended. Plastic fumes are released when cutting with the sonic knife)
Scalpel
Useful for finishing and precision cuts.
Dremel
Used to finish the ABS Car auto part
- Roughly cut the shape out using the bandsaw removing the excess disc material.
- Cut as close to the outline as possible on the band saw.
- Using the dremel with sandpaper attachment remove remaining material around the outer edge.
